Inspired by her observation of shadows reflected in the earth, the artist spent many months perfecting a technique to convey objects in two dimensions on canvas. The subject has been transformed into the artist's own image, and the surface takes its interpretation from the artist. This works best when dealing with living objects or items that are perishable like people or fruits. Alexa Meade's paintings are ephemeral and the image is what remains. Trompe l'oeil is achieved using the two processes of photographing and painting. The result is an unflattened and two-dimensional picture. Meade occasionally integrates painted models into the environment around them. They are able to be part of the world she has created. The boundaries between performance, photography, and installation can be dissolved.
