Queen Latifah was conceived Dana Elaine Owens in Newark, New Jersey, on March 18, 1970. Latifah was the second daughter of Lance Owens and Rita Owens is well-known for her acting and social-politics skills as well as her talent for rhyme. Aged 8 at the time her Muslim cousin named her Latifah which means "delicate" as well as "sensitive" in Arabic. Latifah started singing with the choir at Shiloh Baptist Church in Bloomfield, New Jersey, and was the first person to perform in public when she performed a rendition of "Home" as one of the two Dorothys in a production of The Wizard of Oz at St. Anne's parochial school. Latifah was motivated by her mother who was in constant contact with the school and the musicians. She invited Mark James, a local disc jockey who is known as D.J. Mark the 45 King, to invite her to appear at the school dance.
